Boho Valentine Napkins and Rings
I like to create a tablescape for each holiday. For Valentine’s Day, I wanted to make some light-hearted (get the pun?) napkins and napkin rings without spending lots of money. What could be more light-hearted and fun than tie-dye and yarn?

What could be more light-hearted and fun than tie-dye and yarn?

silver Dollar Tree napkin rings topped with yarn hearts and Love ribbon
I had some left-over white quilting squares that I abandoned years ago after someone borrowed my rotary cutter and mat, and never returned them. I purchased the napkin rings and Love ribbon from the Dollar Tree, then spent around $3 on dye at my local grocery store. The whole project cost around $5. My goal for 2019 is to spend $50 (or less) each month on blog projects for Love My Little Cottage.
Materials Needed:

material for napkins, cut to the desired size
napkin rings (see 2nd picture)
Love ribbon (see 1st or 2nd picture)
dye (I used Petal Pink)
rubber bands
yarn
cardboard
sewing machine and accessories (pins, thread, needle, etc.)
scissors for fabric
scissors for cardboard
1 cup of salt for the dye bath (not pictured)
pencil
Instructions For Napkins:
Place two fabric squares right side to right side, and pin. Sew the two pieces of cloth together about 5/8” from the edge- leave a few inches unsewn, so the napkin can be turned inside-out after sewing. Place the sewing machine stitch dial on 7.

Place the sewing machine stitch dial on 7.

Sew 5/8″ from the edge. Don’t forget to leave a few inches unsewn, so you can turn the napkin inside out.

Turn the napkin inside out.

This is how the napkin will look after the first round of sewing.
After you turn the napkin inside out, fold the unsewn part inward. Top-stitch around the whole napkin about 1/2” from the edge. Sew especially well over the area that was left unsewn the first time around. This two-part sewing method gives the napkin thickness and a nicer edge. In my opinion, it’s a simple way to make napkins.

The napkin will look like this after top-stitching.
Fold the napkin corner to corner, two times. Then roll it up. Tie napkin off with two rubber bands, about 1 1/2″ apart. It’s not really important how you choose to fold the napkins. Just make sure you fold them and band them the same way, if you want them to have the same dye pattern in the end.

Fold the napkin corner to corner, two times.

Tie napkin off with two rubber bands at a time, about 1 1/2” apart.

The vibrant Pink Petal dye really brought out the pattern on the napkins.
Instructions For Napkin Holders:
Fold a piece of paper in half and cut out a 2” heart. Trace the heart patttern onto the cardboard as many times as needed. I made 8 napkins, so I needed 8 hearts to make my napkin rings.

Fold a piece of paper in half and cut out a 2″ heart.

Trace the heart pattern on the cardboard with the pencil.

I made 8 napkins, so I traced 8 cardboard hearts for my napkin rings.

Wrap the yarn around the cardboard until covered.

Cut a 13” piece of Love ribbon, and tie the heart to the napkin ring.
Your Boho Valentine Napkins and Rings are done! I paired my napkin set with a vintage Canonsburg Pottery Keystone dinner plate and a new gold charger from Dollar Tree.

Cute idea, and a great way to use up scrap yarn.
Thanks, Claire. I’m trying to keep my blog costs under $50 per month, so I find myself looking through what I already have before I start a new project.

Thanks. I just went to your blog and read the article about sweet tea. I didn’t know that American tea used to be green. I thought we always used black tea leaves.
Your napkins and rings turned out really pretty! They will be one of my features this Saturday at the Snickerdoodle link party!
Thanks Roseann, I would be honored. I love y’alls Party because I can easily navigate to each hostess site, and the links actually work!
