Sweet N’ Simple Valentine Flag
Last year I made a bunch of burlap garden flags, with the intention of decorating one for each holiday. It didn’t happen in 2018. But here we are in 2019 with my first decorated burlap flag. I really appreciate the durability of burlap and its outdoorsy feel and smell. It’s the perfect material for this Sweet N’ Simple Valentine Flag.
Materials Needed:
*sewing machine/pins/thread/etc.
*burlap flag
*valentine material/fabric
*lace
*iron
*fur (tried, but not used)
*Scotchgard fabric protector (not pictured)
The burlap flag began as a 14″ by 20″ piece of material. Fold the burlap over all the way around, making a 1/2″ hem. Be sure to turn the edges under; don’t leave them raw. Fold the top over 2 1/2 inches, leaving a 2″ gap for the flag pole, while turning the burlap under 1/2″. Sew with a straight stitch, or a zig-zag stitch (stitch 9 on a Brother machine).
Fold a piece of paper in half, and cut out a 5″ heart pattern.
Use the pattern to trace two fabric hearts and one Pellon heart. The Pellon is a stiffener that goes underneath the fabric hearts. It gives the project a sturdier, more professional look.
Experiment with the placement of your lace and fabric hearts. Iron the fabric if it’s wrinkled. Pin the hearts (each heart should have a Pellon heart underneath) and lace to the flag. I tried the fur, but didn’t like how it looked with the lace.
Place the machine on stitch 11; the applique stitch.
Stitch around each fabric heart, then stitch the lace. Make sure all fabric edges are sewn down. I used the same stitch for the lace, because it holds the lace in place better than a straight stitch.
Cut a 1 1/2 inch strip of fabric 18″ long for the bow. Cut along the selvaged edge of the material, to prevent unraveling.
Tie the bow, then trim the edges as shown in the picture below. Hand-sew it into the top left corner of the flag.
You’re Done! Trim any loose threads and make sure the back looks nice too. Use Scotchgard fabric protector to weatherproof your new flag before hanging it outside.
I hope your Sweet N’ Simple Valentine flag brightens up your winter yard!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Kristie
