If you take a drive through the rural landscape of South Carolina, you will see many structures like this Abandoned Hovel Painting– the second painting in my Humble Abode series.
I’m doing the 100 Day Painting Challenge with a friend of mine, so we’ll see how far I can take the Humble Abode series and the Cottage Garden series. The goal is to paint (or draw or sew or whatever your interest is) for 100 consecutive days. The process is supposed to unleash all of your pent-up creativity. We’re going to paint five days a week for twenty weeks, with weekends off. Challenge accepted!

My inspiration was a photo I took on a drive back from Shealy’s, a famous bbq restaurant in Upstate South Carolina. We all met there for my dad’s 82nd birthday. I live in the Lowcountry, near the coast. Down here, we refer to anything above Columbia, South Carolina, as the Upstate.
Look at the naturally-aged tin roof and the homemade foundation. You can see how different parts of the house were added at different times. The white wooden window frames and weathered boards on the house are absolutely gorgeous.

I hope you enjoyed my Abandoned Hovel Painting.
Happy Spring!
