Last September, I went with my husband on a trip to Chicago. Our hotel was in the downtown Riverwalk area, so the view from the window at night was spectacular. The reflection of the lights on the water was a painter’s dream. Chicago Skyline at Night Abstract Painting was my first cityscape painting. I would love to create a scape for each city we visit in the future.
I converted the photograph of the Chicago Riverwalk into a sketch in my favorite photo editor, Be Funky. Next, I printed it and traced it onto an 8 x 10 piece of painted birch board with colored chalk.
I filled in the lines of the painting with the base colors, just like you would in a coloring book.
I added the details on the buildings, streets, water, and bridges color by color. You can watch the video at the beginning of the post to see the exact order.
Little details, like the lines on the bridges and lamppost lights brought the abstract Riverwalk to life. It was interesting to me that the lights in the buildings on the left looked white at the top, then yellow at the bottom near the street.
I framed Chicago Skyline at Night Abstract Painting in a gorgeous little silver frame and hung it on my galleria wall.
Happy Painting,
Kristie

This is such a nice painting. I think I know someone who’d like something similar so I might try something similar. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
Send me a picture to [email protected] if you do. I would love to see it.
Your photo from the hotel window brought back memories — I have similar pictures from trips into Chicago with my husband as well. Isn’t the view glorious? Your depiction of it is lovely. Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm. xo Kathleen
