Are you wondering why anyone would paint Christmas trees on a watering can? I’ve come to find that people use watering cans year-round. They want them for watering plants on covered porches, in city apartments, and outdoors in the sunny South. One of my customers said her husband was tired of watching her mix Miracle Grow in their Tuperware bowls. A Christmas Tree Watering Can is the perfect gift for a true plant-lover. It was also fun to paint! I am the girl who loves to wake up at 4 am and paint until 8:30 when I have to wake the girls up for homeschooling.

Painting Instructions for the Christmas Trees

Paint the 2nd and 4th Christmas trees with a mixture of Hunter Green and White using the flat brush. Base the tree with a higher ratio of Hunter Green, then highlight the bottom of each tree section with upward brush stokes of White mixed with just a tiny amount of Hunter Green.

Base the blue tree with Bright Blue + White, Then apply upward brushstrokes with mostly White on the 1/8″ flat brush-just like we did with the Hunter Green trees.

Follow the same procedure with the pink Christmas trees. Use Bright Magenta, White, and the flat brush. This part is fun!
Painting the Details

Dip the wooden end of a paint brush into Crimson and make “dots” in a cascading pattern on the green trees. Use the liner brush to make loopy garlands from one dot to another. Highlight the top of each dot with White and the liner brush.

Make round ornament shapes on the blue trees with a mixture of Bright Magenta and White with the round brush. Shade with Tuscan Red and highlight with White. Use the liner brush for painting the shading and highlights. Swish in a thin garland with the liner brush and Spring Green + White.

Paint a Bright Blue garland around each section on the pink trees with the small round brush. Make the garland look fuzzy with small strokes of White + Bright Blue and the liner brush.

Paint the ground with Bright Blue + White using the flat brush in a slip slap fashion. Fill in the tree trunks with the round brush and Real Brown + White. Shade under each tree trunk with Bright Blue and the liner brush.

Wasn’t that fun? I’m so excited at the arrival of the holiday season. We’ll be decorating before Thanksgiving this year. I’ve been looking at those autumn decorations long enough!
Merry Christmas Season,

Looks like it was a fun one to paint! Here in Florida, we use them practically year ’round.
It’s the same here in South Carolina, Alexandra.
I love this!!! So cute 🙂 I love the colored chalk rub for transferring too, so injinuitive! The watering can is fabulous…. and you could also do this on regular cans to give cookies or candy in!
That is a good idea, Amanda.
Your painted trees are so very pretty. Definitely something different for the holidays. Thanks for sharing this week. #HomeMattersParty
