Have you ever began a project, then decided to make something else? I was planning to make a face mask lanyard with dyed wooden beads. Then, I saw a textured ribbon tassel on ETSY. That would make a great necklace, I thought, and I do have lots of scrap ribbon. The result was a Fall Tassel Necklace. Watch the video here:

Materials for the Fall Tassel Necklace:

- wooden beads in 4 different sizes
- egg dyeing cups, if you have them
- food coloring/egg dye- red, yellow, and blue
- you can use Rit Dye if you don’t have food coloring
- vinegar
- a wooden skewer
- a lighter or matches
- scrap ribbon
- hemp or satin cording for the necklace
- fabric scissors
- clear tape (not pictured)
Directions:
Before we make the tassel, we’ll soak the beads in the dye. Fill the egg dye cups half way with hot water and add a teaspoon of vinegar. Your dye cups mixtures will be as follows:
orange- 5 drops each of red and yellow/largest beads
green- 5 drops each of blue and yellow/second largest beads
purple- mix 5 drops each of red and blue/third largest beads
smallest beads- do not dye these. We will keep them natural and use them to trim the tassel.

Lay the ribbon strips in a long line in front of you. Straighten them, then fold them in half with your finger in the middle, creating a loop for the necklace to go through later. Wrap an 18″ piece of thin hemp cord just under the loop. Tie a tight knot. Leave the long ends for stringing the small wodden beads.

String 4 beads on one side and three on the other. Wrap the string around the tassel to make sure you have the right amount of beads. You may have to add or subtract a bead. Tie the string in a strong knot and trim.

Trim the tassel to the desired length with fabric scissors. I made one long tassel and one short one.

Now it’s time to take the wooden beads out of the dye. I used a wooden skewer to pick up each bead and set it onto the newspaper to dry. Slip your necklace string through the loop in the tassel. I used a rustic orange hemp string for my necklace, but you can use satin cord or anything else you like. Place a piece of clear tape tightly around the ends of the necklace, then string the beads on each side from largest to smallest. Afterwards, tie the end of the necklace like you would tie a balloon and slightly burn the ends with a lighter. This will prevent unraveling. I included two beads of each size on the necklace.

Your all done! I hope you enjoyed making a Fall Tassel Necklace with me!
Blessings!
