I’ve always admired Hawaiian fabric patterns with hibiscus flowers and surf boards. I had a nice Hawaiian bedding set for my queen bed before we upgraded to a king-sized bed 11 years ago. I found a pillowcase from that set a few weeks ago and decided to use it as a bulletin board cover. I was looking at that bulletin board when I became inspired to make Hand Painted Hawaiian Hibiscus Vans.
Materials for Hawaiian Hibiscus Vans
- white canvas slip-on Vans
- hibiscus pattern- get yours here
- Apple Barrel 2613E Caribbean, 20408E White, 20401E Bright Red
- brushes- 1/4″ angle brush, 0/0 liner brush
- Delta Textile Medium
- Scotchgard Fabric Protector
Instructions:
Stuff paper into the Vans to give them stability for painting. Mix Caribbean and a small amount of Textile Medium.
I tried to use painter’s tape at first, but it was a hindrance rather than a help. I began in the corners with the 1/4″ angle brush and the Caribbean mixture, then worked my way around, under the stitches and along the top part of the sole. It will take several coats of paint to achieve opaque coverage. Use a hair dryer in between coats.
I freehand painted my hibiscus flowers with White and the 1/4″ angle brush. You can also rub colored chalk on the back of the hibiscus pattern, then trace it onto the shoes. If you need more direction, The Chalk Pattern Transfer Method is pictured in my Upcycled Sunflower Coffee Table post.
I chose not to paint the back of my shoes, but my children disagreed with my decision. You could easily paint the section over the heel with Caribbean, then add a small flower.
When the shoes are dry, take them outside and spray them with several coats of Scotchgard Fabric Protector. The fabric protector prevents fading and repels liquid.
I hope you enjoyed my Hand Painted Hawaiian Hibiscus Vans tutorial! If you don’t want to paint your own, you can buy a pair in Love My Little Cottage ETSY Shop.
Blessings!
Kristie
