Do you know how to make a resin necklace? It is easier (and cheaper) than you think. I belong to a local art association. As part of each artist’s agreement, we volunteer to work once a month in the gallery. The last time I was there, I was lucky to get a jewelry artist as my coworker. She told me exactly what to order, and how to make the resin necklaces.
I’d been trying to figure out how to make a mustard seed necklace to go with the middle school girl’s class I’ve been teaching at my church. The week before, we made Decoupage Oyster Shells to go with The Pearl at Any Price parable, and I was looking for a craft to go with the upcoming Parable of the Mustard Seed lesson.
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
Matthew 13:31-32- NASB
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
31 He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

I wanted the girls to see how small the mustard seed is, because faith that is only the size of a mustard seed can do grand things.
Materials for Resin Necklaces

The materials for the necklaces cost around $49, but I came away with a an ultraviolet light that I could use again, and plenty of leftover supplies for more necklaces. Plus, we bought resin that is easy to apply and already mixed.
- Let’s Resin UV Light
- 2mm Leather String
- 16mm Jump Rings
- Let’s Resin UV Resin Kit
- toothpicks (or a lighter)
- Jewelry Casting Molds with Hanging Hole
- masking tape
- scissors
- fresh or dried flower petals, mustard seeds, etc.
How to Make a Resin Necklace
Here’s how we did it:

First, set the silicone mold on a piece of masking tape (the sticky side) to keep it in place. Next, add enough resin to fill the bottom of the mold. Place your flower petals, charms, mustard seeds, or whatever, in the resin. Add enough resin to cover everything and fill the mold. Last of all, pop the bubbles with a toothpick or put a lighter close to them. I heard that resin catches on fire sometimes, so I did not want to let the middle schoolers use a lighter to get rid of the bubbles.
Note: If you buy the silicone molds with the hanging holes, there will be a hole to place the jump ring, so that your necklace will lay flat once you add the leather string.

Place the necklace pendants under the UV light for 90 seconds, then take them out of the resin molds, turn them over on the other side, and place them under the light for 90 more seconds. If you’re doing a few necklaces at once, or if the resin is still tacky when you take it out of the silicone mold, put it under the light again.

Now it’s time to add the jump ring. We were able to open and close the jump ring without pliers. We just used our fingers. Finally. add 24-32″ of leather string and tie it in a slip knot. I love the pendant pictured above that has lots of mustard seeds!

You’re all done! Wasn’t that easy? I hope you enjoyed How to Make a Resin Necklace. Do you see the mustard seeds?
Happy Fall,
Kristie

Those are all so beautiful!
Thank you! The girls loved choosing their own flowers and arranging them in the resin mold.
This is really amazing! They turned out beautifully! I love that they’ve each got a little mustard seed in it–what a great lesson. 🙂 Visiting from Grammy’s Grid Unlimited link party.
Thank you, Jennifer. My mom had a mustard seed necklace when she was a girl, and she always talked about it.
