Guess what? String art is back and it’s popping up everywhere. I thought it would be fun to show my girls How to Make a Valentines Day String Art Heart. It is just as easy as it looks. There are plenty of step-by-step patterns for stringing lots of different shapes on the internet. Are you worried about hammering in the nails? No worries! The 1″ white panel nails went easily into the wood of my 5″ X 7″ oval plaque. My 12 year-old and 16 year-old daughters did their projects all by themselves.
Materials for Valentines Day String Art Heart

- 5″ X 7″ wooden plaque
- medium grade sandpaper
- dark wood stain/varnish
- 1″ sponge brush
- 1″ white panel nails
- crochet thread in tan and red
- string art heart pattern- print the one above
- pen
- ruler
- clear tape
- scissors for string and paper
Prep the Surface

Lightly sand the wooden plaque with medium grade sandpaper. Apply varnish with the 1″ sponge brush.

Use the ruler to find the center of the plaque by measuring its length and width. Mark it with a pen. Print and cut the string art heart pattern. Fold the heart lengthways and across to find its center. Match the center of the heart to the center of the plaque. Put a piece of tape on the backside of the heart to keep it in place while you add the nails.

Follow the pattern on the heart to add the nails. There is a dot where each nail goes. The 1″ white panel nails should hammer in easily. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of room to add the string-don’t hammer the nails too far into the wood.
String Art Instructions

Tie a knot at nail #1. Follow the pattern with the tan string. Go to nails 1, 2, 3 etc. in order. Keep the string tight, but not so tight that you’re bending the nails. When you get to the last number (28 in this case), tie another knot. Cut the string.

You can add another color using the same pattern as the tan string, but I chose to add red string to the outer nails instead. I made a knot at nail #1, then made a loop around each nail counter clockwise, until I went all the way around. be sure to watch the video at the beginning of this post to see how easy it is.

I will take that as high praise, Donna. The nails were so much easier to hammer than what I thought. My girls did it all by themselves.
Fabulous idea. I did a project at a drop in studio a couple of years ago and have been meaning to make another one ever since (this time at home). Featuring when my link party opens up tonight!
