Our Day Trip to the Sistine Chapel Exhibition in Charleston was a great time for making memories with our children. I missed the Van Gogh exhibition (from July to September 2022) and didn’t want to miss out on Michelangelo’s masterpiece exhibition.
When our kids were younger, we spent most of our vacations visiting family and going to amusement parks. I still love visiting my family and going to amusement parks, but I’m ready to add more art, culture, and outdoor fun into our excursions!

On the Way to Charleston

The drive to Charleston is wonderful, no matter which direction you’re coming from. There are plenty of picturesque views of the water, houses, and boats of the Lowcountry along the way.
Shopping and Eating Downtown

Part of the fun of doing anything in Charleston is shopping and dining. Our oldest daughter lives in Charleston, so she knows exactly where to eat. Big Bad Breakfast, a brunch restaurant on Meeting Street, was scrumptious. Located in the scenic downtown area, it had an artsy vibe and fit well into our budget.
Shopping on King Street is always fun. You can’t arrive late though- the stores close early in the evening. Anthropology is my favorite. I need those mushroom tumblers!
The Sistine Chapel Exhibition

The exhibition was educational, organized, and interesting. I’ve heard that it’s hard to get a good look at the actual Sistine Chapel paintings. However, the projections of the paintings at the exhibition were clear and bright. A free app was included with our tickets. You download the Sistine Chapel Exhibition app on your phone, scan in each painting as you go, and listen to the narrative as you make your way through each one. Earphones are not necessary.
My husband and I began on the perimeter, then saved the center paintings for last. The Last Judgement was everyone’s favorite. You’ll have to find Michelangelo’s self-portrait in this painting if you get a chance to go to the exhibition.

Enjoyed this very mu h.. Thank you.
I’m glad you came along with us!
This looks like such a terrific family day out! The exhibit is wonderful, but so, too, is your excursion to this wonderful city and all you did. Your family is lovely, too.
Thanks, Jeanie. The shopping, eating, and marsh views- along with the fellowship with my family- were the icing on the cake.
Wow, what a neat exhibit! So impressive. Visiting from Grammy’s Grid Unlimited Link Party. 🙂
Hey Jennifer, It’s good to hear from you. I’ll have to drop in your blog and see what you’re up to!
How wonderful to be able to visit the Sistine Chapel exhibit! I adore Charleston, such a beautiful and wonderful city with so much to see and do~
I know! I wish I could have made it to the Van Gogh exhibition last summer!
That sounds so neat! Charleston is a beautiful city.
It is! We go up and do an event like that with our daughter about once a season. There’s always something interesting to do in Charleston.
This sounds like a such a good trip. You certainly fitted a lot in 🙂
Yes, I think we tried to do too much, but all of our vacations/day trips are that way. lol
I have ALWAYS wanted to visit the Sistine chapel AND Charleston. I can’t think of two better things to combine. Thanks for sharing some of the amazing images of the paintings. Also thanks for sharing this post on the Home Imagined Link party.
There’s always something going on in Charleston. Boone Hall (Plantation) Fright Nights is coming in October. I’m not sure if I’m brave enough for that, but we’ll see!
