How to Paint A Cozy Winter Sign

It’s time for the December Pinterest challenge, hosted by Erlene from My Pinterventures. The goal for the challenge is to choose one of those pins you’ve been saving and make it happen! The theme for this month is winter. I found a cute pin that featured a dog sitting beside a wood stove. You can see it here. Then, I chose a few things from my own home for extra inspiration.

When I think about winter, I imagine the snuggly feeling I get while sitting next to the fireplace with my fuzzy little dog, Hercules. A hot drink and a warm blanket would complete the scene! Read How to Paint A Cozy Winter Sign to add the same toasty ambiance in your home.

Materials for the Cozy Winter Sign

  • 5 x 7 oval wooden plaque
  • sandpaper
  • paints- 2620E Pewter Gray, 20403E White, 21467E Tuscan Red, 21049E Pink Parfait, 20404E Black, 40432E Nutmeg, 2480E Royal Gold, 21390E Khaki, 2602E Bright Magenta, 21396E Sublime Lime, 20407 Hunter Green, 20663E Beachcomber Beige
  • brushes- 1″ sponge brush, 1/2″ angle brush, small round brush, liner brush
  • Use the Modern Love Grunge font for the COZY pattern; adjust for size
  • colored chalk
  • pencil

Painting Instructions for the Cozy Winter Sign

Sand the plaque if necessary and use the 1″ sponge brush to paint it Pewter Gray.
Mix Pewter Gray and White for the flooring. The striped wallpaper I painted at first will be changed later in the tutorial because the tone-on-tone look of the floor and wallpaper was not pleasing to the eye.
Use the liner brush and Black with White highlights for the wood holder.
Paint the wood with the round brush and Nutmeg, Khaki, Brown, and White. Highlight and shade with Black and White and the liner brush. Sign the piece with White and the liner brush.
Sketch the dog with Khaki + liner brush.
Fill in with Khaki + round brush.
Shade with Black + liner brush.
Add Nutmeg with the liner brush.
Apply White highlights to the eyes with the liner brush and Beachcomber Beige to the fur.
Shade with Black + liner brush, then swish in the tail with Black + Nutmeg+ Khaki + Beachcomber Beige.
Apply Sublime Lime + round brush for the ball. Shade with Hunter Green and highlight with White + liner brush.
Using Sublime Lime for the frame did not work well. It looked so ugly.
I changed the frame to Royal Gold with the 1/2″ angle brush.
Use Hunter Green + White + liner to fill in the leaves on the rug.
Paint flowers with the liner brush+ White + Bright Magenta.
Change the background to Pink Parfait. That’s better! The dog and the wood were the same colors, and the rug and wallpaper were too much alike as well. The pink wall really takes it out of that monotone zone, doesn’t it? Shade with the angle brush + Tuscan Red. Give the dog a few more highlights with White + the liner brush.
I created the COZY pattern on Microsoft Word with the Modern Love Grunge font. Rub colored chalk on the back side of the pattern, then trace it onto the center top of the sign. Paint with Black and the liner brush.
You’re all finished! Take the sign outside and spray it with a few coats of 2X Rust-oleum Ultra Gloss Spray.
