For a homeschooling mom like me, painting for the summer season is more laid back than trying to work in my studio between teaching my children and attending their sporting events during the school year. By the time May arrives, I’m ready to paint fun foods, colorful flora and fauna, and seaside animals and trees.
Fun Foods

I painted the Preppy Donuts this spring, then added an Ice Cream Sundae (this one will be featured at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery from July to September) and an Ice Cream Cone. I have several other warm weather foods in mind that I’ve photographed, but haven’t painted yet. The highlights and shadows in the ice cream paintings were challenging to paint realistically, but I was proud of them when I finished.
Colorful Flora and Fauna

The South Carolina Lowcountry has so many beautiful plants and flowers! My oldest daughter inspires me with her vast collection of succulents. She grows “babies” by putting succulent pieces onto soil and adding ring-shaped lights to the sides of the pots to keep them happy.
I wanted the Happy Hydrangea Painting to look like the 4th of July.
Coastal Animals and Trees

The Sunset Palmetto is a blue and orange version of a palmetto tree painting I sold earlier this year. I wanted to limit my palette to three color groups this summer- blue and orange, patriotic, and light blue/light green/light pink (fun foods) . When I do shows, I want my paintings to have similiar color themes for grouping.
Other Summer Painting Ideas

I’m also painting a new style of watering can for my Etsy Store. I will still carry the 2 gallon version with the spout (pictured above), but plan to add a smaller metal, pitcher-shaped watering can. I’m also running a summer sale this week, so drop into Love My little Cottage Etsy Store if you have your eye on something.
What are you painting/making this summer? Let me know in the comment section. I’d love to gather some artist inspiration from your ideas!
Have a great, creative summer!

You ARE painting the season! Every piece is totally delightful. I especially love the plants!
Thank you, Jeanie. Succulents are a joy to paint.
Seeing all your beautiful paintings makes me imagine your studio as a comforting and creative dream space. Mine is a mess so I am envious. Keeping creating your wonderful paintings. #HomeMattersParty
Thank you, Donna. It is pretty clean right now, but that’s only because I haven’t had it for very long.
Oh my goodness, you are so talented! Featuring your ice cream painting when my link party opens. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks Carol, I will definitely drop by!
OK, now you’ve made me hungry!
Good! Maybe that means it looks realistic enough to eat!
