At the beginning of the pandemic, the girls and I made some tie dye sweatsuits in How to Tie Dye A Sweatsuit. However, I only made a sweatshirt for myself because I thought the white sweatpants would show every bump and bubble. I wasn’t thinking that the white sweatpants would be tie dyed and not white anymore. So, I made myself some sweatpants to match and embellished my original sweatshirt to create a Palmetto Tree Tie Dye Sweatsuit.
Materials for Palmetto Tie Dye Sweatsuit

- white sweatsuit
- Sapphire Blue and Lemon Yellow Rit Dye
- 2 cups of salt
- rubber bands
- straight pins
- Apple Barrel paints- 20411E Cobalt Blue, 20471E Bright Yellow
- paint brushes- small round brush, liner brush
- Delta Textile Medium
- palmetto tree template (print mine here)
- pen, pencil, or chalk for tracing

For basic directions on the tie dye process for this project, see How to Tie Dye A Sweatsuit. For the sweatpants, I used what I call the “Ponytail Method” of tying off the sweatpants. You can see the circular pattern in the dye. I already had the sweatshirt, so I followed the same method of dyeing the pants Lemon Yellow, washing them, then rebanding and dyeing with Sapphire Blue. I was very happy with the result.

Now that the pants are done, it’s time to embellish the sweatshirt with a gorgeous hand painted palm and moon. Make sure all of your dyed items have been washed and dried before painting! I chose a palmetto tree because the palm and moon are symbols on the South Carolina flag. Fold the sweatshirt in half to find the center and mark with a pin. Print the palmetto pattern, then fold it in half to establish a center line. Cut it out. Align the center of the pattern with the top center of the sweatshirt and pin in place, I always put my sweatshirt with the pinned pattern on a hanger and eyeball it to make sure it looks straight before I trace the pattern.

Trace around the pattern with a blue ink pen, chalk, laundry marker, pencil, or anything else that will show up on the colors of the sweatshirt. Paint with Cobalt Blue, the small round brush, and few drops of Delta Textile Medium until the tree is opaque. Highlight with Bright Yellow and the liner brush. You’re all done! Your project is washable and ready to wear! Tie dyeing is a bit of a process but so worth it!

I hope you enjoyed my Palmetto Tree Tie Dye Sweatsuit tutorial!

So much to love in this post, Kristie! For some reason, I never thought of painting on clothes. (Duh!) I may need to paint some of mine! And I love that you linked the tie dye post. It’s another think I want to try sometime. Anyway, I will be featuring this on this week’s Creative Compulsions.
