Watering cans are one of my favorite items to paint. When my daughter asked me to paint her a Halloween watering can to put beside her front door, how could I resist? I have painted my Morkie dog, Hercules, many times, but I have never painted my gorgeous cat, Meg. She was the inspiration for my Scary Black Cat Halloween Watering Can.

Have you ever wondered what an artist used for inspiration? I like to take pictures on my phone, then add artsy filters when I paint something. Although I didn’t choose this pose, I patterned my cat’s scary eyes after Meg’s mean look in this picture. I also loved the way the pumpkin looked when I cartoonized it in my photo editing app.
I love this picture, but Meg didn’t look scary enough.
I paired this pose with the cartoon pumpkin for my final pattern.
First I painted one coat of Brown + White, then added one more coat of White. Next, I traced the pattern onto the watering can with graphite paper.
I began the first layer of my grassy hill with Black +Blue, then painted the bottom portion of the pumpkin with Red.
To finish the pumpkin, I swished in lighter shades of Orange as I painted upwards. The cat was based in with Black.
Use Green, Brown and Black for the stem.
First I painted the cat’s eyes, then added White and Silver details to the fur.
The grass was wiggled in with a liner brush and various shades of Green and Yellow.

She’s all done! I painted my initials and the year on the pumpkin in White.
