In spring of 2019, I made some DIY Wooden Chocolate Bunny Plant Pokes for a guest post. They weathered well outside for the spring season, then I brought them inside until they were needed again in 2020. Their durability convinced me to make some Halloween pumpkins and owls for autumn. I always buy mums, but this year I also bought two potted Petra Croton plants. They were packaged in Halloween-themed planters already. Way to market, Spring Hill Nurseries! The Splatter Paint Halloween Plant Pokes give my plants an even spookier vibe.

Painting Instructions

Spray paint the pumpkins Rose Gold and the owls Silver on both sides. Remember, you want your projects to look nice from the front and the back.

For the owls, dip your big scruffy brush and your toothbrush in water, then dip into Black. Run your finger along the edge of the bottom of each brush to make splatters. Flick the large brush downward to make big drips. Have fun with this- honestly there isn’t a wrong way to splatter. Next, without rinsing the brushes, dip them in White and repeat the splatter process. You need water in the brushes for this technique, but you don’t want the brush to drip water. You want them to drip/splatter watered down paint.

Rinse the brushes and repeat the splatter techniques with Pumpkin Orange and Cabana Stripe for the pumpkins.

Use a blow dryer to hurry things along. Those big paint drips will take too much time to dry otherwise.

Cut an 8″ piece of orange jute. Place it through the hole in the pumpkin, then tie tightly into a bow. Burn the edges with a cigarette lighter to prevent fraying. No need to purchase Fray Check when a Match or lighter works every time.

Cover the bottom part of the plastic plant poke and spray paint the exposed part with Color Place Gloss Black spray paint. The white color of the plant poke did not look appealing behind the wood cutouts, but the black background was just right.
Protecting Your Project

Protecting your project is one of the most important steps toward completion. You don’t want to put loads of effort into your Splatter Paint Halloween Plant Pokes only to have them rot and warp outside. If you leave anything outdoors long enough it will deteriorate. However, if you protect the surface well, you can enjoy your plant pokes for years to come. My DIY Wooden Chocolate Bunny Plant Pokes still look great after two spring seasons outdoors. Okay, that’s enough lecturing. When everything is nice and dry, take the pumpkin outside and spray the jute with Scotchgard Fabric Protector. I completed this step before I added the plastic plant pokes (contrary to this tutorial) because I was waiting for the spray paint on the plant pokes to dry in the sun. The Scotchgard will allow rainwater to roll off the bow, rather than saturate it. Next, spray both plant pokes with several coats Rust-oleum 2X Clear Gloss Ultra Cover spray. Allow for drying between coats.

You’re all finished! I hope you enjoyed this fun, easy Splatter Paint Halloween Plant Pokes tutorial.
Happy Fall,
Kristie
