Upstate South Carolina Cottage Painting

My Upstate South Carolina Cottage Painting was inspired by a house I saw over the weekend. I went to my daughter’s softball game in the Upstate last Saturday. On the way I saw a gorgeous little house surrounded by mature trees. The classic black and white colors and brick foundation won my heart- not to mention the craftsman-style pillars in front. Whenever I travel the rural roads and highways of South Carolina, I’m always on the lookout for quaint cottages with clotheslines, interesting architecture, weathered boards, gardens with staked tomatoes, and other yard kitsch. This is the 3rd painting in my Humble Abode Series. You can see the other paintings in this series below.

**I used the photograph of the upstate cottage to create a sketch.** **The photo app I use, Be Funky, transforms photos into works of art.** **You can inkify and cartoon them as well.**

**I painted the 8″ canvas White, then taped off the edges to create a “frame.”** **Designing a painted frame is simple, and it makes it easy for the buyer to display your art.**

**I used painter’s tape to create a straight edge for the road in my painting.** **Sometimes I use tape to separate different sections of the background.**

**As a rule, paint *first* what your eye sees *last*.** **The grass and sky were created first**.

**Then the trees were swished onto the canvas.**

**The grass, road, and other details were added next.**

**I used transfer paper to sketch in the little house.**

**The brick, door, and windows had terrific, fun-to-paint details.**
