Hugs and Kisses Valentine Sweater Wreath

I’ve been admiring from afar all the beautiful things my talented blogging sisters have created with their old sweaters. I’ve seen pillows, ornaments, mug cozies, footstool covers and many more amazing upgrades. Inspiration finally struck for my own sweater upcycle project with this Hugs and Kisses Valentine Sweater Wreath.

Materials Needed:

• 

• sewing machine and basic sewing supplies
• heart sign from Dollar Tree
• white chalk paint
• liner and round paint brushes
• tape
• light-colored chalk (not pictured)
• Poly-Fil (stuffing)
• acrylic gloss sealer
• mechanical pencil
• wire wreath form
• floral wire
• an old sweater
• fake fur scrap
• decorative foam glitter hearts from Dollar Tree
• safety pins
• I chose not to use the ribbon in the last picture.
• hair dryer (not pictured)

Instructions:

Tie the arms of the sweater into a tight knot in front. Sew your fake fur strip across the collar of the sweater. You want to sew the collar shut in the process. Set aside.

Tie a big handful of stuffing to each section of the wire wreath form with the floral wire. Make sure you twist the wire into a ball on the back side- to keep those pesky wires from poking through later.

Slide the wreath into your sweater

Sew the bottom of the sweater shut.

Now it’s time to paint XOXO on that Dollar Tree Sign. Use this XOXO template to print my pattern. Rub the light colored chalk on the back of the xoxo pattern. Fold the pattern between the first and second set of xos to find the center. Unfold and tape the xoxo pattern to your Dollar Tree heart sign, using the point between the two arches of the heart to center things. Trace the letters with the end (make sure the lead is not out) of the mechanical pencil. This method should give you a perfect pattern for painting.

Use the round and liner brushes to paint the letters with the white chalk paint. Use a hair dryer to speed the drying process. Spray the sign with the acrylic gloss sealer (outdoors) when completely dry.

Sew the heart onto the sweater using the holes at the top on either side. I also secured the heart with a few hidden safety pins under the arms of the sweater.

Cut a small (about 6″ in diameter) hole in the front and back center of the sweater. Whip-stitch around the inside to create a nicely-sewn seam in the center of your wreath.

Transform that ugly christmas sweater into a valentine dream by pinning Dollar Tree foam hearts in the center of every snowflake. I’ve used these Dollar Tree hearts for several projects. They have these same, thin (not like the clunky foam kids’ craft version) foam shapes for every holiday. I used the golden circles for my Make A New Year’s Family Prayer Shadow Box post. The safety pins remind me of arrows cutting through the center of each heart.

I”ve included a secret at the end of this post that only those that make it til’ the end will discover. This wreath is reversable. The back side is ready for Christmas 2019. lol

Also, the hearts could be replaced with stars for the 4th of July (I’ll have to disguise the fur somehow), and the wooden heart replaced by a flag. That will be a project for another season.
