Why Do People Collect Vintage Disney Teapots? Maybe it’s my English (although I am half German) heritage, or the comforting sound of a whistling tea kettle on the stove. Whatever the reason, I just love teapots. Most people love Disney’s stories. The tendency to pair the love of teapots with the magic of Disney is only natural.
Collectible Vintage Disney Teapots
Disney and teapots are intertwined through their many movies and cartoons featuring tea, teapots, and tea time. The first tea scene that comes to my mind when thinking of Disney and tea is the Mad Tea Party scene in Alice and Wonderland (1951). Who can forget the crazy Mad Hatter and “A Very Merry Unbirthday to You” song. On my trip to Disney World in 2008, I bought an Alice in Wonderland teapot set for $24.95. I know this because the price tag is still on the bottom of the teacup. Today it sells for $140 on Amazon.
Tea isn’t just for the English. The funniest tea scene in Disneydom happens in China when Mulan (1998) spills tea everywhere during her meeting with the Matchmaker. With tea all over her face, the Matchmaker shouts, “You may look like a bride, but you will never bring your family honor!” Featuring the Yin and the Yang, the Mulan tea set sells for $20 to $30 on eBay today.
Two of the most endearing Disney characters involving tea happen to be English characters in a French fairy tale. They nearly steal the show in the animated version of Beauty and the Beast (1991). Mrs. Potts (played by Angela Lansbury) is a loving, matronly teapot, and her son, Chip, is her precocious little teacup. There have been many collectible versions of Mrs. Potts and Chip. The new Lenox version (it is probably the most elegant) is not vintage. It is from the live action version of Beauty and the Beast (2017). Mrs. Potts and Chip are arrayed in Lenox signature gold trim. A new-in-the-box set can be purchased for around $140 on EBay.
